Really Pathetic

The politics blog at the Orlando Sentinel covers the latest source of Republican outrage over Rep. Grayson: apparently he gave out the URI of a web site he had created on the floor of the House, and horror of horrors – it has a link to Grayson’s campaign web site!!!!

The FEC has already passed on the site because Grayson paid for it out of his own checking account, not with campaign cash, but as soon as they figure out what ethics rules have been violated, the Republicans are going to file a complaint, and the Democrats have to immediately condemn Grayson for something.

The web site, Names of the Dead, was set up to record the names of people who have died as a result of a lack of access to health care. It has links to Grayson’s campaign web site, his House web site, his YouTube speeches, the text of HR 3200, and the study that provided the number who die every year because of a lack of access to health care.

I hate to break it to the Republicans, but mentioning the name of a web site on the floor of the House is not exactly an effective path to getting a lot of hits. The link at the Orlando Sentinel will probably generate more traffic. If the Republicans hadn’t had a hissy fit, no one would know it existed.

Update: Congresscritter Grayson has had them remove the link to the campaign web site from the page.

I love that Congresscritter Grayson! Nice to see a little testicular fortitude being shown.

If I die for lack of medical insurance, please be sure to list my name on Grayson’s site.

Seriously… the blatant disrespect for the dead is offensive, but the behavior, not of the name-faking public but of the GOP itself in feigning outrage and pretending to be prepared to take legal action any day now, is pitiable. Let it be recorded: the Party of Lincoln is dead, killed by its own hand.

The key to understanding Grayson is to realize that he made his millions as a trial attorney going after corporations for the little guys. He is an advocate for his clients, which are currently the 800K people in his district.

He made about $60 million as a trial lawyer, and lost $30 million to fraud and the games Wall Street played, so he is definitely not a friend of the financial industry. A lot of this is courtroom theater, but he is really, personally pissed off about that missing $30 million, and he intends to spread his pain to the corporations.

He knows what the rules are and will probably avoid breaking any, but he will certainly bend the hell out of them when it helps his case.

The Republicans began their long public suicide in the mid 1960s when they accepted the Dixiecrats and embraced the “Southern Strategy”. Like the modern CEOs they made a decision based on short-term gains, rather than looking at the long-term consequences. After World War I the returning black veterans sparked a voter registration drive in the South, and they were trying to register to vote as Republicans. The Republican Party offered no assistance, so the blacks gave up on them, and when the push started again after World War II, they registered for the Party of FDR.

Heywood got stuck in moderation because the name and e-mail must agree to avoid moderation.
