"There are two novels that can change a bookish 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. Yah, too bad that all the French people who helped us with the American War of Secession ended up getting their heads detached from their bodies and too bad that 1/4th of the military-age men of France ended up dead within the next two decades, but hey, at least they got rid of their king. Until they re-instated the monarchy a few decades after that, but that’s another story.
Violent revolutions. Seas of blood. Never been a good thing come from one of those things as far as I can tell. Too often they end up with a strong man dictator running things and lots of dead people. Just sayin’.
Of course the problem is that the people at the top don’t know when to stop stealing from the people at the bottom, which results in the people at the bottom having no choice but violence left.
If things keep going like they currently are in the US, this is what we will have to look forward to – violence in the streets.
