Close, But No Cigar

I was sure we were going to make it, but although we had sprinkles, drizzle, and brief shower today, we missed quadrupling our average rainfall for the month of July, coming up with only 23 inches.

The local produce is terrible. The tomatoes have fungus, the watermelons are tasteless [more water than melon], lots of things were just washed out.

The local seafood is affected by the over-abundance of fresh water pouring in from the flooded rivers and streams, as well as the runoff from the roads.

About the only things that are thriving are mosquitoes.

And fleas. Don’t forget the fleas. They’re especially happy that their feline blood donors are all huddled together in some warm dry place, perfect for flea reproduction…

It isn’t cold enough for any huddling, but below the raised houses, like mine, are probably the only places the fleas haven’t been drowning. August has started with a half-inch of rain this morning.

We need to tilt the country so some of that rain flows this way to California. Florida is getting moldy and soggy (where it isn’t developing sinkholes and swallowing houses) and we’re baking to the point our forests just ignite out of spite….

You can keep your mosquitoes though.

I would love to be able to ship three-quarters of this mess somewhere. I don’t love watermelon, but it is nice occasionally, and my Mother likes it. Don’t waste your money on one from the Southeast this year. They might look good, but they are tasteless. Nothing is really worth eating, and this my favorite time for veggies because they have always been local and really fresh.

We started August with a half-inch of rain, so there is no relief in sight. August usually gets a little over 4 inches of rain, so I’m fairly certain that will be exceeded.
