Associated Press report on CNN: Leahy: Aides lying about White House-Justice e-mails
President Bush’s aides are lying about White House e-mails sent on a Republican account that might have been lost, a powerful Senate chairman said Thursday, vowing to subpoena those documents if the administration fails to cough them up.
“They say they have not been preserved. I don’t believe that!” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy shouted from the Senate floor.
“You can’t erase e-mails, not today. They’ve gone through too many servers,” said Leahy, D-Vermont “Those e-mails are there, they just don’t want to produce them. We’ll subpoena them if necessary.”
You have the local copy in your e-mail program, the copy on the sending mail server, the copy on the receiving mail server, and the copy on the recipient’s computer. ISPs do tend to back-up and mirror servers. That doesn’t even take into consideration what a data recovery program can do with “deleted” information.
I don’t think the “Rose Mary Woods” defense is going to work.

Maybe they could ask the NSA for assistance. Surely they have copies of everything that was “accidentally deleted.”
But this isn’t Rose Mary’s 18-minute gap; it’s more like 18-month crap. Leahy has it right. Subpoena the @#$%^ outta the lying $%^&*’s.
Using the external e-mail accounts for government business is illegal on its face, so covering it up by trying to use the reason the law was passed, to prevent records from being destroyed is rather outrageous, or f-ing arrogant, if you use those terms.
Rose Mary Woods… I was trying to remember her name. I wonder if they were counting on someone like Monica Goodling to fall on her shiny Christian sword and destroy the evidence in Jesus’ name… rather than run away and hide under the Fifth…
They just don’t make junior level staffers the way they used to in Nixon’s day…
Ms. Woods was filling the oldest job in the White House, the President’s secretary. That was the entire presidential staff until Abraham Lincoln, who hired a second secretary because of the war. She was a long-time Nixon employee and really loyal just to him, in the long tradition of personal secretaries.
With the godbotherers from Regent you can’t really be sure of their loyalty – Pat Robertson, their individual church, the Party, or the Shrubbery. Goodling will, at a minimum, be disbarred over this. They really didn’t believe the rules applied to them.

These soulless fucks make NIXON look like a fucking saint. At least Nixon was capable of GUILT and FEAR, whereas these scumsucking closet-cases (Karl Rove the Queen of them all) charge blindly on, arrogance feeding their greed, willful ignorance/disdain for the law as their self-adorned protection.
If the shit ever really hits the legal fan, I can’t wait to see Karl Rove be shredded in the rapidly-spinning blades.
They did not plan for Congressional oversight, so now they will try to run out the clock. When that becomes apparent to the Repugs trying to keep their jobs this will get really nasty.
