Hard Freeze

We are under a Hard Freeze Warning every night for the next 5 or so days. I’ve been busy moving plants, putting a tarp over my Mother’s pond, and arranging places for the ferals to hole up overnight.

It isn’t a fun experience for man nor beast, and the houses aren’t built for it.

In the old days we would have three of these cold spells a year, and they would last three days at most. Not any more.

Same Insanity Every Year

It is time to stop this. It is past time when taking a firearm out with standard ammunition and discharging it at the New Year is acceptable behavior. Making it illegal won’t stop it, only society will stop it. Only a sane society that tells people who do these things, that they aren’t acceptable, will ever really change behavior.

I was going to write about this earlier when I read about the Italian child being struck by a bullet in the Miami Herald, Boy expected to survive gunshot, but later I heard a report on the Dothan, Alabama TV News: A 4 year old boy who was struck by a stray bullet while at church died Friday.

The family went to church to celebrate the New Year, and a bullet fired in the air by some moron came down, through the roof of the church and struck this small child in the head, as he sat next to his parents in a pew.

This occurred in Dekalb County, Georgia. People have to know who fired that shot near the church. It is time to end this kind of insane, reckless behavior.

Short Takes

My favorite, and most concise, description of the Naughts from Lady Min in comments: “Y2K to WTF”.

The Koufax Awards will open nominations at the end of January. If you are new the Left Side, the Koufax Awards are people based. The people do the nominating and the voting. Go over and review the FAQ.

A lot of people seem fascinated because some junkie has health problems. If you abuse your body, you will have health problems, and burn up a lot of care that should be going to real people that deserve the access.

Thanks to the Hedgemony, a lot of older wealthy people are having to pay a lot of attention to their heirs. In 2010 there is no estate tax, so there’s a very large financial incentive to snuff people with large estates. As a bonus, most of the soon to be offed are probably Republicans.

Friday Cat Blogging

Meow, meow, meow, meow…

[Editor: I’m using an old picture of Vinnie because the batteries died as I was attempting to take a new one. Vinnie talks to me, which is very unusual for the ferals, The toms will howl at each other, but few of them actually vocalize at all. When I’m feeding them in the afternoon, Vinnie wanders around making normal cat meows. Oh, he still considers me the ax murderer, but meowing is odd behavior for the “pride”.

May you be safe from the idiots who think gravity is just a theory and fire off guns, failing to understand that what goes up will come down.

Given the prevalence of accurate timekeeping devices, it is amazing that the explosions that are supposed to signal the new year extend for a four hour period beginning before and extending well after the actual event. Anyone who thinks alcohol and gunpowder is a recipe for a long life should be avoided by insurance agents.

A new year and a new decade begun under a blue moon. There is always a chance that things will get better, but “hope” has a bit of a taint to it this year.
