Thoughts
I’m sending drying thoughts to friends and family in SoCal. I just saw a clip of a guy kayaking down Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach. Now Mission Valley would flood with heavy dew, but I’ve never seen water like that on Mission Boulevard.
I had clients in that area, and their offices would definitely be flooded based on that video.
The Jet Stream has been pushed South into Mexico, so the storms that would normally head in to the Pacific Northwest can now drop down, including the “Pineapple Express” type of storms that plagued the Iditarod two years ago. This is all part of the El Niño effect that is baking Australia.
For the first time I saw one of Obama’s dog and pony shows at my Mother’s. Standard political garbage, i.e. talk in generalities, don’t really address the question, “leave your data with aides”…
I assume he’s better when giving a speech, based on all the paeans to him. He was better than the Shrubbery, but not nearly as good as Barney Frank, or Bill Clinton in this environment.
While Bernanke seems to be in trouble, Geithner is the immediate problem. If you are in the Cabinet and you don’t like the President’s position, your options are to continue to express your concerns in private while implementing the policy, or resign. You don’t make your opposition obvious and keep your job. Unless you are the CEO, it works that way in business, as well as government.

This past week we got hit with hail, torrential rain, tornadoes, mud slides and wind gusts of up to 70mph. It’s actually bright and sunny today. Bright and clear to see the snow on the mountains.
Thanks for the drying thoughts…looks they worked.

CJ, apply those drying thoughts if you wish, but be careful when you direct them in the vicinity of that kayak, which could well be destroyed in that fashion. After all, you can’t have your…
No. No. I must be getting old if I can’t force myself even to type that ancient punchline…

Hmmm, sounds like a thunderstorm on the Gulf Coast, which, having lived in SoCal, I know how freaked out people can get. I heard thunder once in a decade in San Diego, and people reacted like it was “The Big One”. Of course, you don’t have a real stormwater runoff system, and the LA River is better known for movie car chases than actual water flow. Apparently the Station Fire burn area wasn’t hit that heavily, but the Jet Stream is still in Mexico, so there is probably more to come.
Stay safe and as dry as possible. Remember: mold and mildew are just plants.
Not on National Pie Day, Steve.
Dutch Apple is especially nice, but if you don’t have that on hand, toss Key Lime; I’m very fond of it, and it has the virtue of being much messier in a beard…

I have pictures of the Furnace Creek campground in Death Valley as of two days ago. It should be more aptly called the Furnace Creek Boat Mooring Basin at this point in time — you’d need a boat to camp there. Or a very deep bathtub floor in your tent, enough to make it the next best thing to a boat, anyhow ;).
Over here in Sodom By The Bay, we’ve gotten a lot of rain and wind, but nothing that is all that drastic. The rivers and creeks are nowhere near overflowing in the Bay area itself, though some of the periphery has some flooding problems (the usual suspects up in Marin and down along the San Lorenzo whose houses are built between the road and the creek, but they get flooding in a light dew so that’s not unusual). I’m looking forward to the springtime, the wildflowers are going to be absolutely mahvelous down in Coe State Park and over in Death Valley, both of which are deserts usually but respond quite well to rain. If the current pattern holds, it may even be the end of our three-year drought, although even with all the rain of this past week the reservoirs are still only half-full… we’ll need several more weeks like this one to fill them up. We can hope, though…

Good Granny Smith apples, but not too much sugar, so it still has tang, and the fruit is still firm. Key lime is OK. better than pecan.
Yes, Badtux, the desert in bloom is an amazing sight.
Actually, would snow pack be more useful than rain in the long term?
Well, there’s no guarantee on weeks, but the pattern is looking stable for a little longer, so the reservoirs will get some more help.
Of course, the new growth with be fuel for the next fire season, if the drought pattern isn’t broken.
We got SNOW!

Obviously not a “pineapple express” storm. That is really weird.
