Happy Republic Day
Celebrates the establishment of the Republic of India on January 26th, 1950 when its new Constitution took effect.
The parade at New Delhi is, bar none, the most colorful military parade in the world, although last year the elephants weren’t behaving, so they didn’t appear.
Here’s the official site, and, as the Wikipedia entry is really pathetic, here is a tourist site with more information.

Ah, two of the democracies I admire most, founded on the same day! (Well, a couple centuries apart…)
(With a wistful gaze into space…) Sometimes I fantasize what it would be like if I lived in a democracy…
Yeah, but they got to watch us do it wrong, before they created their governments.
Oddly enough, Switzerland patterned its government after the US model, but they include referenda for all of the nasty votes, i.e. let the people decide, so they are more democratic in their version.
Our founders gave careful consideration to every threat to good government that they knew about. But how could they have imagined, with all the safeguards they provided, that exclusive power would come into the hands of individuals and groups willing to sacrifice the long-term stability of the nation for the sake of their own short-term monetary gain. I’m still shaking my head in wonder at that phenomenon myself. It seems the GOP has developed successful approaches to moving the levers of power to accomplish… call it what it is… a mining operation. How do we get past that? Maybe we don’t. 😥
I would think that today is the example of why the founders warned about both political parties and corporations. They intuitively knew of the possible results, but, then, they were radical leftists, so they couldn’t be trusted.
