Hell Will Be Raised!
It looks like Elizabeth Warren is the new Senator from Massachusetts, and a familiar face will be returning as a Congressman from Florida – Alan Grayson. Being bullish on popcorn futures seems like a safe bet.
In addition to the Florida results I’m following the Okaloosa County results.
Frankly, with 60% of all registered voters registered as Republicans, I’m surprised at how few of the Amendments are reaching the 60% threshold in the county. I can’t see any of the ‘social issue’ Amendments passing state-wide if they can’t get more support than this in Fundistan.
Update: it looks like Gary Johnson running as the Libertarian candidate will get the blame for Money Boo Boo’s problems in Florida. I don’t think it would make much difference because the heavily Democratic parts of the state are slow to report.
On the Amendment front, only three Amendments have a majority and they also have the required 60%. Amendments 2, 9, and 11 give extra property tax exemptions to disabled veterans, the surviving spouses of deceased veterans and first responders, and disabled seniors. The voters just told the legislature to ‘stuff-it’ on the social issue crap on ‘Obamacare’ and abortion funding.
The Florida Supreme Court justices are currently enjoying a two to one advantage for retention, another ‘stuff-it’ for the legislature.
What is truly weird is that the same voters return the same legislature to power. If they aren’t doing what you want, fire them and get someone new.

Florida definitely is surprising. I’m looking at the same numbers you’re probably looking at — pretty much everybody except Miami-Dade close to fully reporting and Obama comfortably ahead state-wide by a hanging-chad-proof majority, and the remaining 15% of votes from Miami-Dade are almost certainly to be at least 2/3rds for Obama — which is very surprising given that everybody was predicting a Romney win in Florida. It appears that the Hispanic vote was *very* motivated this year and turned out en masse for Obama, and even half of the Cubans voted Obama. Seems that Republican immigrant-bashing had a surprising effect on the outcome. Who coulda thunk it?!
Well that’s another four years for Obama. Definitely the lesser of two evils

This morning, Badtux, the numbers are on the edge of the automatic recount, but Gary Johnson was a factor . After all of the huffing and puffing and the agony of the robo-calls, it turned out that Florida was irrelevant to the final result, which is fine by me.
It looks like we got rid David Rivera in South Florida, and very probably Allen West, so the delegation with be less corrupt and less crazy. Locally people decided that you do have to pay for the fire department, so some sanity is returning.
No one I voted for was elected, but I didn’t expect them to be, and my vote was counted, so I’m content. The Sharia law proposals on the ballot were turned down and I count that as a win. None of the ‘business friendly’ tax break amendments passed, so another win.
Calle Ocho doesn’t speak for young Cubans because they like Miami and aren’t moved by tales of a Cuba that no longer exists and will never return. Republicans got the old Cubans, but they don’t appeal to the younger crowd, and they sure a hell don’t appeal to non-Cubans.
Jams, the biggest stumbling block to Puerto Rican statehood is Republican control of the House. Congress has to vote on the admission, and then there is another, final vote in Puerto Rico. Who knows what will happen……
There’s the cap on House membership. Also , 50 is a nice round number, 51 not so much. Plus new flags and all. Maybe we could just swap out Mississippi or South Carolina, say… works for me.
Given how little the House does when Republicans are in control, by the time anything is done the rising sea level will remove the need to take action.
