Florida GOP Lawmaker Resigns After Scandal

A state lawmaker under fire for leaving a message filled with obscenities and a racial slur on a colleague’s voice mail resigned Wednesday from the Florida Legislature.

State Rep. Ralph Arza had been urged to step down by fellow House Republicans and by Gov. Jeb Bush.

In a news conference Wednesday, Arza apologized for his actions and said he didn’t want to distract from the work of the Republican-led Legislature.

Family values strikes again.

There was once a vetting process for candidates, now they don’t even submit a resumé. This is no way to run anything, waiting for opponents to do the background checks.

Hmmm… perhaps that party really isn’t the Family Values loving group we’ve been told they are.

You do sort of begin to believe that after a while. The guy is running for a seat in a district with a lot of minority residents whom he apparently doesn’t like very much.

If Rep. Arza cannot control his outbursts when he has been drinking (IIRC, that was the excuse he gave), he should either not drink, or not hold public office. I’m glad to see he agrees, and has resigned. What is the minimum we have a right to expect of any public official? I think “not spewing racist obscenities” is included in that minimum.

How much can one generalize? It’s hard to tell, but there certainly seem to be a lot of GOP officeholders and candidates with “family values problems” these days… and this after ranting for years about how moral they are.

I believe it was Emerson who said, “The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons.” And in the case of GOPers, the faster we lock up our sons and daughters and spouses and (not so incidentally) wallets. Party of family values, MFA.

They know the codewords, they just don’t bother to honor the underlying principles. They don’t have to because of the propaganda campaign of the Republicans. They have convinced people that being a Republican is proof of virtue.
