The Art Of Mathematics

Maru of WTF is it now? always has interesting artwork at her place, and the fractal Bouquet led back to this great collection and an interesting dustbin.

The author/artist, another penguin, makes it freely available, but a link is appropriate.

I hope it isn’t egregious blogwhoring to note that our good friend Catherine (Lotus’s human) also runs a fractal site called Fractalissimo, and that she spent part of her July 4 holiday adding more breathtaking fractal images of her own creation.

Catherine’s eye is as good as the penguin’s, but very different in the style she aims for. Her images are copyrighted, but I don’t know the details of the terms of use. In any case, they’re a lot of fun to look at, and she updates pretty regularly.

So many creative people; so little time!

And the problem with blogwhoring is?

3 hipparchia { 07.05.07 at 8:30 pm }

what? this isn’t the summer of free blog-love? there’s money involved?

You will find that those of us whose income is derived from our copyrighted material tend to view things in a slightly different light than the general populace.

I haven’t checked, but I suspect Catherine has taken the usual precaution of publishing low-res images of her work. She doesn’t really talk about selling her fractals, but over on her photo site (linked from the fractal site), she uses relatively low-res images that do not compete with the stunning prints she sells. FWIW, she has had two professional exhibits in the real world that I know of, one of pics of animals, another of NYC streets and buildings.

So yes, the photo site is a bit like those windows in the Amsterdam red light district: there’s money involved if you want to possess, but you get to look for free. That’s a better deal than I provide in my business; I don’t give away code samples. 🙂

yes, but the blogs are free. 🙂

[in spite of my distinctly anarchic sympathies on a lot of issues, including this one to some extent, y’all needn’t lecture me on intellectual property rights]

Don’t get defensive, we are “jerking your chain,” we took your comment the way you intended.

I would note that both Steve and I pay for our blog hosting and bandwidth [chill out, another jerk on the chain].

Always assume Number 7.

FWIW (again, this is chain-jerking, hipparchia), I happen to know that Catherine pays for both her site and some management tools aimed at photographers, and in addition she licenses some photo cataloging and photo web presentation s/w… both almost essential if you’re managing tens of thousands of images and, in addition, gradually approaching a site from which one can sell things. (She’s not quite there yet.) A blog simply wouldn’t do the trick for her application.

Catherine’s own photos of animals are often stunning; see for example the horse on the front of her photo site at the moment. She is also working on a third project: selling stock images, e.g., for commercial use, images drawn from her vast and growing personal collection of historical photos, which she mostly purchased at over-perfumed trendy little shops in small towns. 🙂

That lady must never sleep, considering everything she is involved in. She even has a day job as well.

FREE BLOG-LOVE! I DON’T PAY Y’ALL ONE RED CENT FOR ALL YOUR TRIPE-LADEN BLOVIATINGS, NOR WOULD I EVER, NOT EVEN IF YOU SERVED THEM TO ME BUTTERED SIDE UP ON A SILVER PLATTER WITH FINE LINEN NAPKINS AND TABLECLOTHS AND SOFT MUSIC PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND. NOW LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE: THE CAT IS DROOLING ON THE CAPS LOCK KEY, AND SPEAKING OF KEYS, JUST EXACTLY WHICH ONE IS THIS FUCKING “TWISTED” KEY THAT YOU’RE JABBERING ON ABOUT?!

and, yeah, just in case it’s not obvious to whole world by now, intellectual property law is one of my soapboxes that i have a hard time coming down off of.

besides dumping the privateering health insurance insurance industry, we also need to rein in big pharma, including making some serious changes in the way drugs are patented.

[not to mention that i’d like to become fabulously wealthy by selling my paintings]

14 Bryan { 07.06.07 at 11:49 pm }

Copyright was working fine before everything got diddled to help out the Mouse, and patents have no place in software.

Drug companies should not be able to renew or extend patents when all they have done is make minimum alterations to their basic formulations, rather than creating something new.

People who create nothing, like RIAA, should not be allowed to own copyrights or patents. Transferring rights should negate them. The purpose of rights is reward creativity, not enrich corporations.

Oh, unless you have figured out some way of getting on the ‘Net without paying an ISP, you are paying for everything you do on line, you are just not paying the people who create it. [What, you thought I would pass up another tug?]

The cat is obviously a serious foodie. You’ve gotten him/her all excited with your fine dining fantasies.

What a hilarious thread… you two should, um, I was going to say “charge admission,” but considering the topic…

steve,

the cat ws drooling because i’d just given him his last pill [those things taste nasty] while he was supervising my blogging. he hadn’t yet braved the phalanx of kittens to get to the food bowl at the other end of the room.

the only tripe allowed on this table is that which i’m typing into the computer.

bryan,

wrong again.

i still had a handful of offers for free dialup service to work my way through, even after 2 years of [free] dialup service. i only recently relented and started paying for a faster internet connection because i was starting to feel guilty about using my employer’s time and equipment to research stuff to whine about later on my own [free dialup] time.

did i mention that my computers are all [free] hand-me-downs? as was the [free] digital camera that i’ve been taking all those kitten pictures with.

i’ll concede this much: if i told you that i was powering all this equipment with a [free] hand-me-down solar collector and that i had secretly tapped into the neighbor’s phone line, those would be lies. i have been paying for phone and electric service all this time.

seriously though…

i’d have to agree with you on all those points.

among other things, i’ve read that drug companies also develop drugs based on research that’s originally been paid for by public funding, and then gain patent rights to the drugs. i haven’t gotten around to researching this one yet, so i don’t know how true it is.

and grrrrrrrrr they don’t need to be patenting “novel life forms” and DNA sequences.

even more seriously, i really would like to know how to make that smiley you speak of, but i never did figure out which key is “twisted.” is there a dictionary somewhere of all these smileys? i tried all the ones i ususally use in instant messaging, but most of them don’t seem to work here.

[of course i wouldn’t expect you to pass up another tug. i wouldn’t, why should you?]

17 Bryan { 07.07.07 at 9:09 pm }

Hipparchia, it is literally the word “twisted” sandwiched between two colons.

The official list of WordPress smilies is here, but I’m so used to people assuming #7 that I don’t bother.

Regarding drug research – the companies pay a minimal royalty to the National Institutes of Health or other Federal agency to use their research. I haven’t been able to verify that they also tend to add their own patent which essentially covers the design of the pills and packaging, which is really a copyright thing.

I want a return to the original concept that you have to create something to get the intellectual property rights.

Oh, you should put up some of your art work, but you have to watch the resolution. It has to be high enough to really show the work, but low enough that the graphics compilers don’t rip it off. It isn’t easy, as a relative has been making adjustments on her photos for years and still isn’t happy. A virtual gallery is one marketing tool.

Over here in the Embarq zone, no one provides free anything. We are lucky when national ISPs have a number that only costs us 25¢ per call.

18 hipparchia { 07.08.07 at 12:26 am }

words? you have to type actual words to make smileys? smileys are supposed to be just a few keystrokes, and voila! instant emotion. this explains why they call it wordpress, i suppose.

as for the internet service, i used to drive through your part of the state quite a bit, and always though it looked like a nice place to live. but i can’t say i envy you your internet.

i agree that the one who does the creating ought to get the intellectual property rights, but i’ve also done a fair amount of arguing [imagine that] in defense of plagiarism. more on that at some other time, though.
