In his Saturday liar-side chat™, the Shrubbery complained that the surveillance law needs to keep up with technology. What he was probably looking for was cover for some of the illegal activities that the cheney-bots have been up to for years.
He apparently thought that Congress was going to rubber-stamp a law to help him, but what he got was a response from a veteran of political battles, John Conyers: Committee demanding details of NSA data-mining
In a Monday letter, Rep. John Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to hand over “all opinions, memoranda and background materials, as well as any dissenting views, materials, and opinions” about the data-mining program.
…
In his letter, Conyers wrote that his committee is considering changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and therefore must be “fully apprised of these controversial, and possibly unlawful, programs.”
The Michigan Democrat continued, “It is difficult to craft appropriate legislative responses unless we have all of the relevant facts concerning these programs.”
The Shrubbery asked for legislation, so it will be impossible to really spin away the request for information about the program. They created this disaster on their own.

FYI: Today (Wed. 8/1) is the day the ACLU is urging us all to phone our congresscritters in opposition to Bush’s proposal. The ACLU web site is not very helpful… I got info from the email list instead… but I trust everyone reading this thread knows their congresscritter’s phone number.
Jeff Miller is a waste of protoplasm. He does whatever he’s told by the good ol’ boys who run local politics.
