Utopia?

Chet Scoville at Shakesville has a question for liberal-minded people: Do you believe in a utopia?

I’m just not ruthless enough to stamp out all of the Republicans, so there is no way of establishing a utopia. When you have Repubs weaseling their way into power, there’s always an increase in poor people, so that problem will be with us forever.

If you are a liberal, you believe in people making their own choices, and too many people choose to be greedy and ignorant. Utopias aren’t possible until people learn to share, and accept that “all men are created equal.”

The answer is Yes, but only for those who choose it.

Unless you can figure out a way to keep the “other” out, your utopia will be under constant attack by people “who know better.”

all men?

the legends and puppies tour: sounds like a utopia to me.

i actually prefer a life with some measure of discord in it. one of my minor fears is that i’m wrong about this god stuff and that i will be sentenced to an eternity of halos and harps and angel wings. if all my critters are waiting for me there though, it would be pretty cool. curmudgeon cat alone could stir up enough discord to get us all thrown out.

It is a worthy concept to work toward while recognizing the work will never be finished until we get a little more evolution under our belts…assuming Mother Nature allows that to happen and we aren’t punished too severely for what we have done to her so far.

Hipparchia, that is a rather well known quote. I’m comfortable with halos – all I have to do is take my hat off at noon and the reflection is blinding.

As a goal, FM, as an ideal to strive for, of course, but there are too many who think they know what other people are required to do for me to have much hope of things getting better any time soon.

I guess it depends on what you mean by Utopia. If you think we can have a world without conflict, no. If we can have a world without violence between people, who choose to organize themselves in a non-violent method of dispute resolution, then yes, for those who so choose.

To me, Utopia is merely the end of war.

9 Bryan { 12.20.07 at 7:21 pm }

That, Michael, is possibly achievable on a local level.

10 Michael { 12.20.07 at 8:18 pm }

It’s achievable wherever we have dispute resolution alternatives to violence, which is everywhere.

11 Bryan { 12.20.07 at 9:21 pm }

People have to be willing to use the alternatives, which is going to require them to evolve.

Yes, and we’re going to have to end cannabis prohibition to encourage this.

[i thought it sounded familiar]

I have a purpose in blogging, you know. I state my agenda upfront though. And I have no profits from it, just my certainty. FWIW.

The plain truth is cannabis is peaceful. People sharing herb do not shoot one another, they talk, or just chill, it doesn’t matter much, because the whole point is to get to learn to live with one another in some kind of harmonious way, or to find a way to live apart without rancor.

When you write Cannablog, there can be little doubt that you aren’t hiding your advocacy, Michael.

Well, I’m a blog whore and a concern troll I suppose, but I try to be a good commenter as well.

18 Bryan { 12.24.07 at 8:21 am }

I have no complaints, Michael, advocacy is a basic reason people read and write blogs.
