This Is How You Do It

Over at NBC they had the story: Salmonella fears prompt N.C. food recall

RALEIGH, N.C. – State officials announced a recall of fresh jalapeno peppers and avocados distributed in North Carolina after samples from a food distributor tested positive for salmonella.

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services on Thursday said in a statement that it asked a Charlotte food distributor to recall the items it received from a Texas food supply company because of possible salmonella contamination.

The statement said:

“The HASS avocados were shipped from Texas in boxes labeled `Frutas Finas de Tancitaro HASS Avocados, Produce of Mexico,’ 60 count with lot number HUE08160090889.

“The jalapenos were shipped in black plastic crates weighing about 15 pounds and containing no brand name or other label.”

They had reports of a problem and they immediately went out and started testing. They gave out specific information as they had it, so people could check to see if they were affected, including people outside of North Carolina.

They can now backtrace the products and test facilities, because it is unlikely that the avocados and jalapeños were contaminated on the farms, as avocados are tree-borne.  My guess is the problem is a supplier with a tainted water supply.  Fruits and vegetables get hosed down during shipment and in displays.

Of course, between the California wildfires and this recall it will be a tough year for fans of guacamole and the green lard… er, avocados.

It’s amazing how North Carolina figured this out in a couple of days, but the FDA is still “wondering in the wilderness”.

Avocados really are a ripoff: all pit and rind with tasteless mush the color of kitchen appliances [yes, there are still some of those around] in the middle.
