Family Values

Let’s say you are a black family from Chicago and you really need a vacation.  Your choices are Hawaii and South Carolina – which would you choose?

Now we’ll add that you have family in Hawaii and the father spent a major portion of his childhood, and graduated from high school there and that his grandmother, who raised him, is 85 and in failing health.

Of course, if they choose South Carolina, Gramma wouldn’t mind.  She would tell everyone she knew several times a day how she didn’t mind that they chose not to visit her.

I guess if you are a clueless Washington pundit who has no concept about how families actually work, you might believe that the Obamas had a choice.

The pundit lost this viewer years ago, she is a moron. It’s exactly what I’d think would come out of her mouth.

…I found myself once again writing NPR (seems to be a regular thing anymore) to remind them that the sort of wacked-out “political analysis” that Cokie Roberts offers (such as this morning’s continuation of her pushing the Republican line that going to Hawaii was “exotic”) was one of the primary reasons that I had ceased contributing to public radio-thons…

Out here on the Left Coast, a vacation to DisneyWorld sounds pretty darned exotic, and the non-stop flight from Portland, Orygun, to Honolulu is hours shorter and many, many dollars less expensive that most of the the one- or two-stop flights to Orlando…

Having been to both locations, and having relatives in one, and lifelong friends in the other – Myrtle Beach has a nicer beach than Waikiki, but the water is cold and the surf is wimpy.

Waikiki isn’t the only beach on Oahu, and there is a lot of interesting stuff to show two little girls who need to visit with their great-grandmother. There are things to do in Myrtle Beach, and it is less expensive but kids need to connect with their family so they know who they are.

You would think that people who keep yapping about families would understand that.

oh, they understand it perfectly, so much so that they know they cannot afford to have the voters noticing that their candidate’s family values are so very much worse than their opposition’s family values. consequently, they have to yap loud and long about the faintly decadent aspect of vacationing in an exotic locale and conveniently not notice the frail and elderly grandmother.

i can’t help it, but i’m curious what the yappers would have made of this trip if grandma still lived in kansas.

Somewhere someone writing on this said that if they had gone to Myrtle Beach, the frail elderly Gramma is all we would have heard about.

They were prepared to kvetch regardless.

If he hadn’t taken any vacation the complaint would be about mistreating his kids by not taking them on vacation.
