In Memoriam

Hipparchia’s canine ‘foster mother’ to feral kittens, Fluffy Black Dog, has made his last run on the beach, and licked his last kitten. He was 16.

oh gosh, those have got to be the cutest little balls of fluff ever! and the fluffy black dog would consider this a fitting memorial.

They are little cuties but I guess stroking them is contraindicated!

The FBD would have been trying to herd them, and would have found them before I did. Like I said, I heard them before she decided to move them to the pump house for weening. I’ll have to start checking the car for kittens before I can use it.

Jams, you would never get close enough to touch them. They pop down the holes in the concrete blocks to avoid you, if they don’t just run away. They are feral.

Awwww! KITTENS!!! How cute! Send them over to me. Well, maybe not. Maybe I can make a trade? Some well aged kitties for some kittens? HA! My kitties would be pissed off if I traded them… and for kittens, yet.

Hipparchia – I’m sorry to hear about Fluffy black dog. 16 years is quite a good run of fostering kittens, though. RIP FBD.

OWL, if any of the ferals encountered snow, they would totally freak out. If you can get near them you are welcome to them, but they are definitely warm-weather cats.

Ms Underhouse is proving to be a very efficient hunter. She has stocked their larder with a bird, a mouse, and a squirrel to convince the kittens of the benefits of solid food. They seem to prefer the Kitten Chow and wet canned food I have provided, so I hope mama cat ceases and desists from further hunting of anything that isn’t a rodent.

Cuuuute! And a blue and two grays… the colors of my alma mater! What more could I ask!

hipparchia, I am saddened to learn of Fluffy Black Dog’s departure. Sixteen is a ripe old age for any dog. May you be comforted by all the good memories of FBD and the kittens.

As all of my alma maters tend to feature maroon or red [Colgate, Indiana, Troy] I can’t replicate that for myself, Steve.

Speaking of “kittens”…thought you would like to see one of the little kitties that are arriving around the area…some abandoned…

I really get annoyed when people abandon cats and kittens. Feral cats are not strays – they have adapted to survive in the wild. The abandoned are homeless, and are not ready what the wild offers, which isn’t a lot.

The group around me can survive if I don’t feed them, but the birds and other critters might not. People just don’t understand.
