CBS reported [with a link to the original story by an Alaskan blogger, Steve Aufrecht] Joe Miller: Communist East Germany a Model for Border Security.
Mustang Bobby made the point that for East Germany the border was more about keeping people in, not keeping them out.
The real reason the border was “effective” was the existence of the Warsaw Pact forces led by the Soviet Third Shock Army in the East, and NATO forces in blocking position in the West to prevent a break-out over the North German Plain and/or the Fulda Gap.
Now if Mexico would put two mechanized armies on their side of the border and the US put the same number in the North, and the parallel fences with associated mine fields were in place, you would get the border control of East Germany. As I don’t think either Mexico or the US is ready to put 200,000 combat troops with supporting tanks, guns, and aircraft in static positions along the border, much less both, Joe Miller puts his ignorance of history on display.
It was called the Cold War, and the border was called the Iron Curtain. It was in all the papers and on TV, Mr. Miller, even in Alaska. I know, because I was in Alaska and in Germany during that time.

Oh, they don’t like the 14th because it says if you are born in the US, you are a citizen, as well as restricting the power of individual states to discriminate.
The 16th established the income tax, and the 17th provides for the direct election of Senators. I have no idea why they don’t want Senators directly elected, unless they think that it is easier to control the Senate when they are appointed by state legislatures.
I don’t see any of the amendments at risk from these people, as it is damn hard to amend the US Constitution. It requires a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress and approval by three-quarters of the states.
I would note that all three were passed by Republican Congresses.
Well, in Florida, you can shoot for just about anything, but no one has been shooting at any “illegal aliens”, because if they are citizens they may be carrying a gun and will shoot back. These people just like to hear themselves rant.
See, if there was something better on television, we wouldn’t have to put up with them. Everyone would be watching TV, and not annoying the rest of us.
What pisses me off (and it’s the same here) is that Immigrants that apply and are accepted for citizenship have to know more about the country than these moronic retards in Gov obviously do! I think that to be elected to any office, they should be required to pass the same test (at least! in fact, it should be a LOT tougher! They should also be required to pass an IQ test, and a military style psych profile! I’d guess that at lest 90% of the current crop of morons-in-Gov would fail. (and I do mean here as well as there)!
It will never happen because the majority the people are just as stupid and ignorant as the Politicians they elect! And also, nobody who would pass such tests, would want the job if they are honest, and the others should just be shot to save all the future trouble they would cause. An intelligent crook is far worse than a stupid one after all. 🙂
The money people like stupid politicians, they are much cheaper and easier to control. In the US the biggest problem is money. Politicians spend as much or more time raising money to cover the cost of campaigns, as they do working at the job. The President only makes $400K per annum, and Congresscritters around $175K. Who in their right mind would spend a million dollars to get a job with a two year contract that only pays $175K?
Obviously the money has to come from other sources, and that leads to the corruption in the system.
Our free speech rights make controlling this mess almost impossible.
The O’Donnell incident is just another example of someone chanting slogans that they don’t understand. Hell, I’m not even sure people are required to take a course in American government in school anymore. I was, but I get the feeling that it is now optional or not offered.
Actually, I found intelligent crooks a lot easier to deal with, and only slightly more difficult to catch. Real morons can fake you out, because it will take a while to accept that they really are clueless, and they tend to be less accepting of their arrest.
With politicians, the dumber they are, the smarter they think they are. They memorize some phrases and act as if their words are pearls of wisdom. They aren’t easily convinced that they don’t have any pearls, just the marbles they lost.
Unfortunately civics classes, like history classes, can teach you a lot or nothing at all useful. No doubt I took some civics along the way, but that’s mostly too far back for memory. I do remember feeling shocked as I later found out something about how the system really works, as opposed to what I’d been taught. I also recall having to sit through a semester of rote anti-communist indoctrination in the seventh or eighth grade (it was a required course in 1960’s Florida).
Wow, PJ, that was really hardcore. I did middle school at a DoD school on Bitburg AB in Germany, where my Dad was maintaining nuclear missiles targeting the Warsaw Pack forces in Eastern Europe, and they didn’t do that to us.
Oh, yes, there is a wide gap between theory and practice in the US political system, and it is in the interests of the two major parties to keep it that way.
