A free programming tool that allows anyone to create their own animated stories, video games and interactive artworks has been launched.
Primarily aimed at children, Scratch does not require prior knowledge of complex computer languages.
Instead, it uses a simple graphical interface that allows programs to be assembled like building blocks.
The digital toolkit, developed in the US at MIT’s Media Lab, allows people to blend images, sound and video.
This could get addictive.

OOooo! There goes the rest of my free time….
It’s really bad when your excuse for no doing something is eliminated. I’ve done some simple animated GIFs, but they were just too time consuming. Now they are making it simple.
If this had been around in 1985 or so, I’d have had a good answer to the more technology-oriented public health grad students who came to me with the request, “teach me to program games.”
(The servers are overloaded now, so I’ll have to wait until later to try it for myself.)
It’s logo on steroids.
I remember creating games in BASIC, but then went over to Assembler because the results were so much faster.
ASCII art, Cave, punching characters out on paper tape – there are so many ways to waste time with a computer.
