"There are two novels that can change a bookish 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Je vais au festival français aujourd’hui ici en Santa Barbara. Apprécier le vin, le fromage “stinky” et des desserts de chocolat.
http://www.frenchfestival.com/
I prefer their breads to their deserts, their farmers cheeses to the bleu, and German wein to French vin, but I would have made the sacrifice if it were available. Actually we have a local French bakery, a husband and wife who immigrated more than a decade ago. Michel also is a rather decent jazz guitarist. The Gulf Coast is an odd place for them to settle, but there was too much competition in the Big Easy, so they settled over here.
We have a couple little French food “jewels” here in town. Mimosa, which has terrific food and amazingly reasonable prices and soups to die for and a Pacific Crepes, which was serving up crepes hot and tasty at the festival. Their prices are a little high, but the quality is worth paying a little extra for.
Bought my beret. Bought handmade “European Farmer’s Market” bags. Filled up on song.
Might go back today for more (more specifically….the Poodle Parade)
You should know that Poodles are a German breed, the standards were bred as water retrievers, like Labs. The grooming is to help them swim – warmth around the chest and thighs, the puff on the feet like “flippers”, the snoot shaved to make it easier to grab the duck, and the puff on the tail to make them easier to follow in the water. The shaved body reduces drag. A very good sporting dog, that the Germans called “French” as an insult.
