Tonight!!

If you have a clear sky and no light pollution from the local area, tonight at about 10PM will be the start of the best viewing of the annual Perseid meteor shower.

With a new moon, the action will start in the northeastern sky and progress to the east as it gets later.

We got smoke.

Looks like we might get a DC-10 Supertanker in the neighborhood.

Yep, the one out of Victorville that was grounded after its last fire. It clipped some trees because of a downdraft.

20K+ 12K gallons a drop.

Updated: That would be Tanker 910.

… no light pollution from the local area, …

Ha. HaHa. HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa!

A few years back, the Perseids were so numerous and bright that they actually were visible from Houston. I went out to the swimming pool, leaned back on a chaise lounge, and stared upward. I saw five streaks in the same number of hours… and considered myself satisfied.

The irony is that there are kinds of streetlights that not only do not emit nearly as much light pollution, but are also more efficient in lighting streets, and thus save energy costs. A lot of the newer company parking lots west of town are built that way, but the lights near my home inside the Loop are mostly the old kind. Besides, it’s still 86°F at 10pm… I think I’ll blow it off this year.

(Best of luck, Jill; I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you…)

watching that one YouTube video of the planes dropping their firefighting loads, it was a little scary seeing the weaving and dipping of the fixed wingers. And here I thought coming into Klamath Falls with a full on thunder and lightening storm was bad many years ago….

I’m really hoping we don’t have a plane go down over here. These pilots are brave (and, yes, slightly insane) souls. Greatly admired, however.

We have the sodiums which aren’t quite as bad, Steve, but the businesses stick with the bright white halogens. It’s a pain. If it was the southern sky I could go to the beach where the turtle protections keep the light pollution down, but the east is a loser for me.

It’s a skill, Jill, learning to fly with the throttle as well as the stick to get out of the turbulence. You have to go in low for accuracy, but there’s not a lot of room for a mistake.

We’ve got clouds. And a lot of residual humidity, both from getting our normal August allotment of precipitation in the first week or so, plus a little humdinger that passed through here early this morning. I think we might be gearing up for some more of that tonight into tomorrow.

Since early Friday morning when we had the worst incident of thunder and lightning I have ever experienced, constant booming for 90 minutes, we have alternated clouds and thunderstorms. This is also our forecast for the coming week.

I hope someone gets to see it.
