What’s A Cubit?

Michael of Musing’s musings is checking on the price of gopher wood and pondering the real question: “How long can you tread water?” as the rain continues to fall and the rivers continue to rise in his area of the Midwest.

But Fallenmonk reports that although the state is experiencing drought and a record number of days above 100°, a majority Repub committee of the Georgia House reports “No Worries” as Global Warming is not real.

Well, I know how much credence I put in a GOP judgment on reality…well, actually we don’t yet have an instrument to measure levels that small, but better electron microscopes are being built every year.

Update: If you never seen or heard the routine, here’s Noah on Youtube.

at least somebody thought to ask this time.

2 Bryan { 08.24.07 at 10:49 pm }

It was one of Bill Cosby’s greatest routines. I wore the grooves out listening to it.

3 hipparchia { 08.24.07 at 11:56 pm }

thanks for that! hadn’t heard it in years.

4 Bryan { 08.25.07 at 12:06 am }

I felt sure some one would have put it up.

the revolution will be youtubed. or else it won’t happen at all because we’ll all be youtubing.

Fortunately some of us are not really into video, and others are on dial-up.

As I’ve probably said before, I know all about cubits. My first starring role (as a recorder player) was in a high school rendition of Benjamin Britten’s setting of the 16th-century mystery play, Noye’s Fludde. I played the Dove’s music. “God” sat on a throne onstage, wearing a crown, and had more lines than in Cosby’s skit. His instructions to Noye began (as rendered only in rehearsal by our “God”),

Three hundred cubits
It shall be long
And fifty broads
To make it strong.

It is a miracle [sic] that the actor didn’t speak it that way in performance. I never found out where Noye was supposed to find the fifty broads.

the only videos i watch [mostly] are the speedpainting ones. otherwise i use youtube to find music [mostly] to listen to at work.

I never found out where Noye was supposed to find the fifty broads.

I’d never heard the routine before. Very funny!

You can’t expect shipbuilding accuracy in a book written by and for sheepherders, but it does tend to tilt the balances towards works rather than grace as he was required to provide sweat equity for salvation.

Most people know Cosby as a comedy actor, Jams, like Bob Newhart. They were very funny [IMHO] stand-up comics before ever going into sitcoms.

shipbuilding for sheepherders!

People forget that for most of their history the Jews were nomadic herdsmen, like most of the people in the Middle East. This is what you do in desert and semi-desert conditions.

You can also get it on iTunes, I think. That, or I burned it onto my iPod from a CD of Cosby routines I have somewhere around here.
