For Shame
A whole lot of y’all have posted on the unfortunate Ms Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina, and her answer to a question on geography education. She obviously had no idea what she was supposed to say.
Excuse me, but half of the American electorate in 2004 voted for a man with an MBA from Harvard to be President of the United States who couldn’t have answered the question any better. All this video shows is that Miss Teen USA judges have higher standards than American voters.
I can assure you that Ms Upton feels bad about her performance, which is more than you can say about the resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Update: in comments Scorpio of Eccentricity has a link to Ms Upton explaining what happened on the Today Show.

My God that made me cringe. I could be smug about it but I fear many young britons wouldn’t do much better…
That really is too bad but you make an excellent point about Bush and his intellectual curiosity.
After reading a few Presidential press conferences, Jams, I know the Shrubbery would have been worse, because he would have been defiant in his ignorance. We have a major problem in the US of not mandating geography and history any more. This is the result.
Fallenmonk, it is painful as a stereotype of the South. I don’t doubt her parents spent a lot of money and time educating this young lady in everything except her school subjects.
Someone should have been more merciful in the competition and stop it about halfway.
She has redone her map question on Today — http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20473692/from/RS.2/
She was already ahead of the Shrubbery for admitting she made a mistake, and scored more points for correcting it on national television.
I love Randi Rhodes today. She said that this young lady answered the question better than Alberto Gonzales answered his before Congress.
She apparently froze on camera, which is understandable as she doesn’t do this all the time. She was fine on the Today Show.
