New Words

Blogtopia is fertile ground for neologisms, newly coined words.

While reading various peoples’ reaction to the attacks on young Mr. Frost by the Blight I came across a pair that I really like.

Echidne offers Malkinized, which can be considered “swiftboating by blogs” and Watertiger offers us Malkintents, for the mob which gathers around Ms. Malkin’s hangin’ tree, as opposed to the “ditto heads” who are limited to AM radios.

I still think of them as Sniglets. Am I the only one who remembers Sniglets?

Thanks for the link, Kenneth. I particularly like “Somnambapologist,” which Stella most definitely is. Kenneth, I’ll bet you also remember mondegreens.

“Malkintents…” heh. But I’m afraid “Malkinized” and “Malkinization” (later in Echidne’s same article) are too close to Jack Balkin’s longstanding blog name “Balkinization” to receive full credit… Balkin should get at least a nod for his prior art.

They are both riffs on Balkanization.

I do remember sniglets, though not the show or books. There is a commentator on one of the public radio shows who discusses language and has referred to them several times.

Being a heathen I made a comment about the “bouncing” Baptist preacher in Montgomery who should have moved to Birmingham if he was so obsessed with vulcanization. [For non-locals Birmingham, Alabama was a major steel town and has a regionally well known statue of Vulcan] For some reason, offense was taken at my remark.
