Fire Update

The CNN coverage of the SoCal fires:

Two fatalities and 1,000 homes lost in San Diego county with more than a half million people evacuated. There have been 300 homes lost in the fires around Malibu and Los Angeles county.

The winds seem to be moderating, which helps in controlling the fires and allows the fixed-wing aircraft to fly fire suppression missions.

The Harris Ranch fire is also causing destruction in Mexico around Tecate.

Smaller fires have been springing into existence all around the area, including two on Camp Pendelton and one on the Lajolla reservation.

The Shrubbery is set to play disaster tourist on Thursday, which will ground all aerial operations and pull fire fighters off the line to act as a back drop at a media event. If he feels a need to do something, he could donate the fuel that he would use for the trip to the fire fighting operations. After New Orleans no one believes him when he promises aid.

Hope he doesn’t forget his guitar.

He bringing the locusts with him?

Giving the choice between disaster tourists and looters, I prefer looters – they have a real purpose.

Dan Quayle played golf all the time at the Torrey Pines club when I lived in San Diego, and although the trips weren’t announced, you knew they happened by the traffic back-up on the I-5 as he drove between the NAS Miramar and the golf club. The world has to stop when these jerks are around and it’s even worse now.

I know what I’d like to do with that guitar.

Actually, Jill, FEMA is a functional equivalent.

I think you know where I suggest Commander Cookoo Bananas and his crime family put that handy guitar and where Quayle can stuff his nine iron.

Well, I have heard some personal good news – the on shore flow has finally started working again, and the Del Mar evacuation has not only been canceled, but the air is breathable thanks to the ocean breeze. This also pushes the fire back onto itself and allows crews to start containment work on the Witch Creek fire.

Yes…there is good news to report. Del Mar and Solano Beach evacuations have been lifted. Malibu fire is doing OK…they seem to have it headed off before it reaches Topanga Canyon.
The Magic Fire is being contained.

The really bad, bad hot spot right now is Lake Arrowhead. That can always change depending on the mercurial nature of the Santa Anas.

The ash and soot floating around here is just really uncomfortable. The eyes itch. the nose is plugged up. The new perfume is BBQ flavored. Fortunately we are quite some distance from the fires, but we still get the “crap” (can I type this on your blog?) of the fires and some remnants of the Zaca.

Jill, I was an NCO in the Air Force and in law enforcement, I have heard a lot worse than “crap” and have no problem with people venting, as that is a major virtue of blogs.

While I have managed to avoid major fires for the most part, I was around for the Mission Valley fire in San Diego, so I’m familiar with the smoke and ash, although it was nothing compared to what you have experienced this year.

I could see the smoke from the Okefenokee fire, and smell it as well from two smaller local wildfires earlier this year, but there wasn’t a lot of ash and it was pine burning, which isn’t bad.

Eucalyptus on fire = explosive device

That is the entire main road through Rancho Santa Fe – huge eucalyptus on both sides. I hated them for their bad habit of large limbs just snapping off for no reason.

The Santa Fe Railroad started growing them on the property to use as cross ties because they grow straight and quickly in Australia, but they twist and are brittle in the US soil.
