Get Ready For The Next Musical
Just so you know: Argentina’s first lady wins poll
Argentina’s current first lady, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has secured victory in the country’s presidential election.
With most of the ballots counted, Mrs Kirchner had an unassailable lead with 44.9% of the votes.
Her nearest rival, former lawmaker Elisa Carrio, has admitted defeat, trailing on 23% of the vote.
Mrs Kirchner will succeed her husband Nestor Kirchner and become Argentina’s first elected female president.
Argentina wants you to know that this had nothing to with Eva Perón, but they wouldn’t say no to a visit from Andrew Lloyd Webber.

You’ve got musicals on your mind.
don’t cry for me, cristina.
the two women took 68% of the popular vote. way cool.
Actually, Jill, I have never managed to last out an entire musical. My Mother’s best friend loved The Sound of Music and received a new tape of the movie every year for Christmas. She actually wore out tapes playing the thing, so I saw most of that one over the years just visiting.
As for Evita, I have only been subjected to the “don’t cry” bit, and managed to not listen or leave before the end of “Argentina”.
Unfortunately, Christina lacks Eva Peron’s backstory, but she is a populist and peronist.
from “don’t cry…” to “…argentina”? that’s quick work.
given eva’s untimely end, cristina may be better off with her own story anyway, even if it is her husband’s to some extent. interesting that the two of them can keep alternating presidencies ad infinitum, or at least until the voters tire of them.
as for evita, i remember that one song all the way from “don’t cry…” to “…argentina” and a few scattered [musical] phrases, but that’s about it.
the sound of music i could sing [but will spare you] most of, by heart, having seen the whole thing many, many times. still, i never did figure out which song y’all were talking about.
the mere mention of either tim rice or andrew lloyd weber conjures up almost the entire album jesus christ superstar in my head; words, music, the disitnct voices of each of the soloists [and the cover art too].
Ah, Hipparchia, swap Maria for Obama.
had to go look that one up. apparently my brain refuses to store both “wild child” and “problem” in the same memory bank.
“Webber,” please. I know he’s an (expletive deleted) Tory, but at least we could spell his name correctly. His music is frequently cloying, but better than average for recent composers of musicals.

Try two words: “for me”. I had to listen to that (another expletive deleted) musical over and over again one summer in my job at a university music library, while the library was closed and we all did cataloging work. The other employees and student help loved it. I liked it well enough the FIRST time…
The one work by Webber that I genuinely enjoy is Cats. I even have a videotape. Of course, T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book… has nothing to do with how much I enjoy it; oh, no…
can i claim cat-like tyeping on that one?
somehwere around here i’ve got old possum’s book of practical cats, plus i’ve seen cats in person, both of which are/were terrific, but i can’t remember a lick of music from that one [words, yes; cats, yes].
You guys have lost me. I don’t know what the book says, but from practical experience with both possums and cats, they don’t like each other and are a danger to each others young.
cats eat baby possums?
eliot
possums, cats
Baby possums look like rats and are the same size.
true. but baby possums have very scary parents.
They start moving independently while still small enough to look like large rats, as my Mother can attest to, as she has had a few baby possum infestations in her house.
