Ignorance Is Normal

New York Times Books reports that Conservative Authors Sue Publisher

Five authors have sued the parent company of Regnery Publishing, a Washington imprint of conservative books, charging that the company deprives its writers of royalties by selling their books at a steep discount to book clubs and other organizations owned by the same parent company.

These authors are apparently totally unfamiliar with how corporate media conglomerates work, and how their individual works climbed on the bestsellers lists. It is always sad when the naïve are confronted with the harsh realities of the corporate world.

It’s a bit pathetic that these individuals actually think that thousands of people would have been willing to go into their local bookstore and put down the full retail price for what they had written, if the evil publisher hadn’t been buying up copies and dumping them on the remainder market.

These wimps should get a grip and stop complaining about the way the “free market” works. They should be thankful that Regnery didn’t make them pay to have their drivel printed. Maybe they should form a union and go on strike to see if anyone cares.

Plenty of vanity presses would gladly take their money to produce fine looking books they can sell themselves at full price.

There are even some among the vanity and short-run presses who don’t pretend they are going to promote and sell it for you, just print the thing.

These people have done such a great job conning themselves that they don’t understand that no one who is really interested in what they say is much of a reader.
