"There are two novels that can change a bookish 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

we could all go to more concerts.
Good suggestion. At this time of year it is easy to get wrapped up in your own stuff and forget that a lot of people in your community really need a little help. Thanks for the reminder.
The Radio Live concerts are a good way of doing it locally, Hipparchia, as well as the lettercarriers drives, but Caring & Sharing is in a bind with the construction down turn and the rising fuel and food costs.
Locally we have people who work at the attractions that shut down for the winter and the deployments among the lower ranks in the military. We seem to have a low unemployment rate, but that is masked by the fact that many people who get laid off never qualify for unemployment and are trying to make a go by working at day labor.
I appreciate your “plug”
One of the saddest stories I read in the past couple of years was a story out of the Sandy Eggo area where they had military families relying upon Food Banks because the families were in such dire financial straights due to low pay for our military.
We have a good deal of homeless Vets here in town…we also have lots of people who are food insecure. Not alot of money to go around when you pay close to 70% of your income on rent.
Namaste, Bryan. Namaste.
For people who don’t know, E-4s and below with a couple of kids qualify for food stamps, and when the military member deploys the income takes a hit because of the cost of two “residences”. We have the same problem locally with Air Force families.
Things would be better with base housing, but there isn’t enough of it.
