To Get The Rebate, You Have To File
CNNMoney has an important piece of information on the rebates that Congress passed: Wanna tax rebate? You gotta file first.
If you know someone, especially someone on Social Security, or possibly a student who only has a part-time job, who doesn’t normally file a tax return because they don’t make enough to pay taxes, if they made $3,000 last year they may be eligible for a rebate, but they won’t get it unless they file.
They are apparently handling this through the Internal Revenue Service, and they don’t “know” you exist unless you file the form.
There are usually groups in a community that offer free help with filling out the forms, so you don’t need to go to a tax preparer and spend a chunk of the rebate to file.
Spread the word, you have to file.

Ahhh! Now that whole rebate thing makes sense. 🙂 It’s just so the Gov can collect more data from people who usually want to stay out of Gov databases! I get it.
Right. The World makes sense again! Phew. LOL
It is the worst possible way of dealing with this, tasking an agency at its busiest time of the year with a whole new procedure after Congress already screwed them up by passing changes to the tax laws well after the normal deadline.
He’ll half the people preparing their returns with software probably don’t know that there are changes that affect this year’s returns that aren’t in the package they bought in the stores.
There are also a number of large organizations that have had to get extension on sending tax documents to people, because they didn’t reflect the new laws, so no one should have filed yet, and things were already a bloody mess before the rebates.
I’ve been waiting for the final form I need to file mine, and have no idea when it will get here. I should have gotten it in the first week of this month, but I may have to file for an extension, because if my figures are wrong they’ll ding me for interest and penalties.
$300 to sign this form!
Did I mention it was an enlistment paper?
You really need to read everything you sign and make sure it isn’t on NCR or carbon paper.
If they start offering tax preparation services at Army recruiting offices near college campuses I would get extra suspicious.
Heh.
Not that any of this affects me, since I’m in a tax bracket where I won’t get anything back (and don’t need it anyhow).
My Mother refuses to file for a rebate. She thinks it’s a stupid idea and the money should have gone to food stamps and heating assistance. I doubt I qualify because of the way business was last year, but who knows. I sure won’t spend it if it comes in, as things aren’t looking great for this year.
