Cinco de Mayo

Mexico

Wikipedia usually has to “lock” its Cinco de Mayo page. I suspect it may be related to the sudden appearance of sites opposing the celebration of this semi-holiday and others who have a hissy fit about any Mexican holiday being celebrated in the US.

In Mexico Cinco de Mayo or Batalla de Puebla, is only a really big celebration in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place.

The Mexican army won the Batalla de Puebla on May the 5th, 1862, but the French went on to Mexico City in 1863 after receiving reinforcements and installed Emperor Maximilian.

It has the status of St. Patrick’s Day in the US, an excuse to eat different food, and drink different booze, and be obnoxious show an interest in other cultures.

Margaritas, tacos, and the destruction of piñatas, that’s what it is really about, although some people have other interpretations.

If I was in San Diego is would be another excuse to go down and buy a freezer load of los burritos combinaciones at El Indio [if it still exists].

Bryan, if El Indio doesn’t still exist, come to Houston: I can point you to a number of places at which you can buy a freezer-load of the genuine article, no matter what style of Tex-Mex or Mex-Mex you prefer. And that’s any day of the year, not just Cinco de Mayo.

I haven’t looked at schedules this year, but there’s usually plenty of Mexican food and drink and free entertainment available in the big city park. I used to attend when I lived across the street from that park, but that can’t happen this year due to my injury, so I’ll just have a margarita at home. (Sigh!)

But it will be different because it won’t be Baja Mexican. I’m not saying it won’t be good, but food is regional with different spices and modes of preparation used in each region.

Most people miss the regional differences in other countries. That can result in their missing out on some great meals because they didn’t like something with the same name, but from a different region.

Some people think Chili always has beans in it, or bar-b-que is always covered in a tomato sauce.

Chili is the meat unless it is stated to be con carne, and BBQ doesn’t necessarily mean sauce of any kind.

I don’t know, Bryan. Walk into a small cafe in New Mexico (not necessarily the trendy part) and order a bowl of chili. In some places, you’ll get a bowl of mostly water, a respectable quantity of beans, and enough chili pepper to set fire to the place. That’s it… no meat, no frills, no tongue in your mouth after your first bite. Wonderful stuff, and nothing at all like what they serve in South Texas.

Until recently [the building of Lowes and WalMart, odd “coincidence”, I’m sure] if you did that locally, the can it came out of would say Hormel. Now you are seeing Tex-Mex and interior Mexican cooking, which is OK, but not Baja.
