Comment Editing

I’m trying a plug-in that is supposed to permit you to do comment editing after you have pressed Publish.

If it gives you any problems, let me know.

If it works, I will be removing the Preview button, as it doesn’t seem to be serving its purpose.

well, it didn’t change the your comment is too short issue! 😉

also, i am computer-challenged in many ways and could be just missing something, but where is the i want to edit my comment button?

Hmm, does this work? Testing testing 1 2 3 testing. (Tap tap tap.)

Ah okay, it gave me a click to edit in the next 5 minutes link, I clicked it, and here I am. Yep, seems to work.

Hipparchia, it works like Corrente – you don’t see anything until you post and you can’t edit a comment after you made the final save.

I finally brought it up on a different machine where I don’t have supervisor privileges. Because I can edit in the backend, it doesn’t come up for me as an admin user.

I can edit? WATCH THIS I’M EDITING! …

It works!

Why does it give a countdown? Can’t edit after 4 minutes?

Seems to give you 4 minutes to edit, no matter how many times you edit the same comment.

it only sort of works like corrente, apparently, because i have no edit this button, or link, or message of any flavor. perhaps, unlike corrente, your particular plug-in doesn’t like my particular browser?

Ellroon, it resets the timer every time you save, so you can do multiple edits if necessary.

Hipparchia. you obviously have extra privileges at Corrente that I don’t have, because this system is what I see when I comment over there, i.e. an edit link appears after I save a comment, and disappears after the time has expired.

9 Badtux { 08.12.13 at 3:15 pm }

Bryan, I didn’t see the timer reset, it seemed to keep counting down from where it’d left off after I edited and saved.

Testing again…

Yep, it kept counting down from where it left off. I clicked at 4:30, and when I saved, it continued counting down from 4:30.

I must have been too quick when I tested it, because it always seem to be in the same place when I looked.

11 hipparchia { 08.15.13 at 1:04 am }

no I have no extra privileges at corrente. i have the same 3-minute edit window there that you do.

the problem is that here at your blog i have fewer privileges than the rest of your commenters – unlike everybody else I have NO way to edit my comments here.

trying this with a different browser….

12 hipparchia { 08.15.13 at 1:06 am }

nope, i see no way to edit my comment with this browser either….

13 hipparchia { 08.15.13 at 1:08 am }

i actually prefer the preview option to the edit comment option anyway, so i’m hoping you go with that.

14 Badtux { 08.15.13 at 2:35 am }

Hipparchia, my guess is that you have noscript or some similar plugin in all of your browsers that’s blocking the little piece of Javascript that does the countdown timer.

But you’re right, if it’s not working for you, there’s probably a dozen other people lurking who would have the same problem if they attempted to post. Getting rid of the preview button is probably a good idea… though I do enjoy having the edit function too.

15 Bryan { 08.15.13 at 11:10 am }

OK, I’m not getting rid of the Preview because I use it to avoid having to save and then edit my comments in the Admin area since the Edit option doesn’t work for me after I log in. I’ll leave both.

It must be a Javascript thing, although I haven’t looked at the code for the plug-in, for you to be experiencing the problem in multiple browsers.

My guess is that she’s running a firewall program that monitors her network connections for “suspicious” JavaScript from “suspicious” sites and removes it. It’s the only thing that could explain why she can edit on one blog but not on this one.

Yes, keeping both the Preview button and the Edit button is a good thing…

17 Bryan { 08.15.13 at 7:19 pm }

Given the way my host deals with IPv4 this site will indeed look suspicious to some software and using .US as the TLD certainly doesn’t help, because everyone knows how shifty the US is 😉

i had pretty much decided it must have something to do with some of my antimalware settings. i do like to be able to check up on some of the more dubious corners of the interwebz occasionally.

19 hipparchia { 08.15.13 at 7:48 pm }

because everyone knows how shifty the US is

my computer apparently thinks so!

20 Bryan { 08.15.13 at 8:22 pm }

My URI resolves to whynow.nfshost.com which has a dynamically assigned IPv4 address. Whenever I install the SSL that shift won’t be apparently to outside software, as it is now.

The editing plug-in may look like the ‘man in the middle’ that it logically is, as it needs to verify that a user doesn’t have editing privileges to decide whether or not to become visible.

One of the things I’ll be doing with the PI is visiting ‘interesting sites’ because it is so easy to create a new system card, that I won’t care if it gets hit with something bad.

ha! gmta. 🙂 that was the first thing I thought of when I first learned about the raspberry pi and its relatives.
