Ms McCaffrey died at her home in Ireland on Monday, apparently the result of a stroke.
The first woman to win the Hugo and to win the Nebula, she wrote dozens of readable books in multiple series.
She continued to write into her 80s and was available to her fans.
She will be missed.

*SIGH* Ms McCaffrey will indeed be very sorely missed! She was one of the special ones, and had a gift that is sadly rare these days. 😥
She was one of the authors that got my fascination with Sci-Fi started as a teen. I read “The Ship Who Sang” and then “Dragonrider”. I enjoyed the Brain Ship series, and the Dragonriders of Pern series, and several other books of Anne’s.
And so, another wonderfully creative & imaginative voice is silenced. 🙁
Still, she leaves behind a wonderful legacy, and she worked hard for several decades to give people a way to escape their troubles, if only for a short while. With heartfelt thanks, Rest In Peace Anne McCaffrey!
Everyone needs an escape, especially when reality sucks as much as it currently does.
And I just discovered her last year… sigh! R.I.P., Ms. McCaffrey; you made a lot of people happy.
She actually did a lot of research for the Dragonriders, which is unusual when you are dealing with a fantasy world. She created ‘logically consistent’ fantasies, i.e. impossible things happen, but they follow rules so the reader can understand what’s going on.
i like some scifi some of the time and i’ve never much been into fantasy, but i loved ‘dragonriders’.
Like all of the successful series in scifi and fantasy, Pern is a fully developed concept. It takes a lot of work, but the good writers do it.
