It only took a week to finally let these guys do their job: Navy And FBI Join Bridge Collapse Search.
The Navy dive teams are on stand by in case they are needed anywhere in the world. They load their equipment into an airplane and can be on their way in hours, not days. They train to work in ship wrecks, and are familiar with working around jagged metal and debris.
The FBI has apparently brought along a submersible to use in charting some of the more dangerous areas, but the Navy divers train in currents, so they will be able to make rapid progress.
I just don’t understand why it took a week for this to happen.

i almost hit a motorcyclist the other day, as i was driving down the road. it wasn’t just my usual reckless driving, he had no working brakelights. i did get a close-up view of the back of his t-shirt though: rescue diver, interfering with natural selection.
Part of the course work is completed in Pensacola. A neighbor who was an Air Force special materials welder took a class in deep water construction diving from the Navy. He was in RED HORSE, the Air Force’s combat engineering unit.
He didn’t say, but I assume it was for rescue and/or recovery in the Gulf.
IHe was really planning to get out to work on the oil rigs.i know people who did that, professional oil rig divers in summer, snow skiers in the rockies or sailors or scuba divers in south america in winter. i was envious at first, but i don’t care how much the job pays, living in a bubble on the bottom of the gulf would get old. especially after you got the bends a couple of times.
I agree, I would have thought that Navy UDT and SAR divers would have been flown in that night. I flunked out of quals for UDT because of bad inner ears. Would have been much more exciting than fixing computers.
The money is good, but that’s because the work is so hazardous. No thank you. I’ll stay at two atmospheres or less.
