Health Care Fraud

Fallenmonk has been watching Rudy and discusses Keeping it Honest.

Rudy has a new ad out in which he says: “You and I should be making the decisions about what kind of health care we get with our doctors, not with a government bureaucrat.”

He makes claims about prostate cancer survival rates in various countries which makes it rather clear that the Japanese have a much lower rate of prostate cancer than Westerners, and no matter where you live in the West, or what your health care system looks like, between 26 and 30 men per 100,000 die of prostate cancer.

I would note that many, possibly most, prostate cancer patients are treated by Medicare or the VA as the disease tends to be noticed later in life, so government health care is a significant factor in the cases.

As for talking to doctors, well, if you have Medicare you get to talk to doctors, but most HMOs have their own bureaucrats who are every bit as obstructive as anyone in government. Rudy would know this if he hadn’t spent most of his life with government provided health care, including his bout with prostate cancer. Government provided health coverage is okay for Rudy, just not for the common people.

Prostrate cancer is a problem but it is not nearly the problem overall health care is. Using it, whether falsely or not, to show that government(single payer) health care is bad is disgusting. We need an honest discussion of the benefits and costs of a single payer system modeled on the very effective programs in place in the rest of the advanced countries of the world. We are not going to get it while the government is owned by the big pharma and insurance companies.

Corporate profits are more important than health care to the GOP. They keep generating smoke to hide the reality.

Giuliani received tax-financed health care and seemed happy with the result, what about the rest of us?
