“Lift ev’ry voice” is a common expression among those who participated in the civil rights movement (it’s from a hymn tune, I’m sure)… so much so that Lani Guinier titled her third popular book “Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice“. Maybe we could use some of that kind of inspiration about now.

FMU traces itself back to an all-black school in Jacksonville, Florida where the two brothers who wrote the song were alumni, and it was first performed there. That is the reason for their strong music program.
