The ‘Crusade’ Against Women

According to the BBC the Vatican orders crackdown on ‘radical’ nuns in the US

The Vatican has ordered a crackdown on a group of American nuns that it considers too radical.

It says the group is undermining Roman Catholic teaching on homosexuality and is promoting “feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith”.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious is the largest organisation of Catholic nuns in the US.

Echidne goes to the core of the problem: the nuns are acting uppity.

‘Noz has a problem with the Vatican’s thinking that concentrating on “poverty and economic injustice, while keeping ‘silent’ on abortion and same-sex marriage” is a bad thing for the nuns to be doing.

Charlie Pierce pulls no punches in his view of this latest action by the Clan of the Red Beanie. Charlie notes that the Vatican is upset because the nuns didn’t support the lies of the US Conference of Bishops that Obamacare would provide government funding for abortions.

Charlie also outlines the recent history of the archbishop put in charge of the investigation and his judgement concerning child abusers among the priesthood.

It is beginning to look like the Vatican is conducting a purge.

It is my impression… and, I admit, my sincere hope… that the Catholic Church is an entity whose days of power in the larger world are mostly behind it. I used to try to be understanding, but the Church has, with malice aforethought, rendered that impossible… and I’m not even going to try anymore. Let Rat Zinger zing his rats; I just don’t care.

If Obama has a second term, he’d damned well better not consider appointing another Catholic to the Supreme Court. I can’t help thinking about an old laxative commercial about prunes: “Are two too few? Are six too many?”

And as usual, they’re starting with the vulnerable first.

They think.

Go nuns!

This is beyond stupid. Women are the heart and soul of every religion. It is the women who usually introduce children into religion, and they are the workforce that keeps local congregations alive and active. Attacking women is both arrogant and ignorant.

We are watching institutional ‘suicide’ in action. What is the Catholic Church going to do if the groups they are attacking say “Fine, we’ll become Episcopalians, if you don’t want us” ? Where are they going to get the teachers for their schools and nurses for their hospitals, two of their biggest profit centers?

Bryan, due to the decline in the Catholic orders, there are relatively few nuns teaching in Catholic schools or nursing in Catholic hospitals nowadays. They’ve left those positions to be filled by secular workers. They’re more likely to be working as social workers for Catholic Charities or the state, where they feel they best fulfill their Christian duty to serve the poor. And the perfumed princes in the Vatican could care less about the poor, so …

It’s really tough being female these days. The blood pressure keeps rising after listening story after story of how we are stupid, vapid, “uppity”, “too indepenent”, etc. I can’t for the life of me understand how ANY woman could be a Republican or Catholic these days.

Grrrrr.

Down here, Badtux, they are in the supervisory roles in local Catholic schools and hospitals, as they are ‘aging out’ with few young women entering convents. The Vatican seems to be ensuring that the trend will continue.

The numbers are declining, Jill, and every stupid move they make just speeds up the process.
