Juan Cole on the Connecticut primary: Lieberman’s Defeat

Finally, it is important because whether or not the liberal blogosphere played a significant role in dumping him, many will say that it did. Being perceived as powerful is almost as good as being powerful.

For those who live on another planet, Lieberman is not exactly a champion for the First Amendment or women’s rights, and aligns with Perle, Feith, et al. on foreign policy.

Good ridance… So addicted to power that he’d go against the party that has supported him for almost twenty years…Nice… npr said that 60% of people in CT disapprove of his going Independent (all people, not only dems)… The only thing that makes me mad is that he’s not going to join the ranks of the unemployed. He’ll get a cushy job making tons of money… probably Haliburton … Hey, if it happens, I called it!

With 18 years in the Senate he’s got a nice retirement and health care plan for the rest of his life. His wife is already a lobbyist, and he’s on a couple of “think tank” boards, so money beyond his existing millions is not a problem.

It looks like he’s got a case of “Katherine Harris Syndrome” and lost his connection with reality. He thinks he’s entitled to the job.

Being perceived as powerful is almost as good as being powerful.

I love that line!

It’s a fact. If the media thinks you’re powerful, you are in a limited way.
