"There are two novels that can change a bookish 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

And that’s not even the first step. Until 30 years ago, a woman was basically stuck with her husband for life, even if she found out it was a mistake to marry him, unless she could prove that he was having sex with another woman. Until 30 years ago, a married woman was not allowed to own property in most states — all property was the property of her husband via “community property” laws that were skewed to the man’s side (for example, the husband could sell off any assets she owned and purchased with her own money without her permission). Until 30 years ago, a married woman here in the United States was basically a slave of her husband, with no ability to leave the relationship — no money of her own, no property of her own, no legal rights of her own.
And we criticize various overseas states for their women’s rights records? Talk about the ferver of the recently converted!
Do note that the Christofacists want to return us to the “good old days” of pre-1920’s America, with women stripped of the right to vote, the right to own property, etc., where women are basically slaves of their man. Go read Gary North’s stuff on Christion Reconstructionism. You’ll puke in disgust once you’re through. Gary says what the rest of the Christofascists believe but won’t say, which is why he is a best selling author in Christofascist circules.

Most people don’t know, but until the 20th century everything a person earned until their 21st birthday belonged to their father in most states. Nice little racket the gentlemen of Britain had going in their common law.
1776 is a convenient date for white males of property.
The Religious Reich is a shrinking minority that is given influence well beyond its actual impact on the nation thanks to the Republican party.
