Halloween Comes Early

Civil Defense

That’s the old symbol of Civil Defense, but these days you would have to visit a museum to see it, although some states and localities still use it in conjunction with their emergency management systems.

As Andante notes, those of us who attended school in the 1950’s and 1960’s still remember air raid drills and hiding under our desks.

This was the period of Mutually Assured Destruction, Nuclear Winter, Thermonuclear War. If I’m not terribly impressed with threat mongering, it is because I remember vividly what it was like knowing the planet could be rendered uninhabitable. The situation portrayed in On the Beach was the push of a button away. Dr. Strangelove means a whole lot more to those of us who remember Kennedy and Khrushchev.

When Glenn Greenwald talks about the distortions used to justify the unilateral executive power because of the “exceptional” threat, some of us remember that this threat isn’t especially exceptional.

You would think that with all of the money they have spent, the Republicans would at least be able to defend the Capitol building, but that is apparently too difficult for them to master. Maybe they should dig a moat.

Maybe they should dig a moat.

Maybe they should attend to the mote (sic), or is it a beam, in their own eye.

I recall that the improvised last line of the instructions given to us children who dived with bemusement under our desks and put our heads between our legs… most of us understood the absurdity of doing so… was “KYA goodbye.” What never happened to us children of the Cold War may yet happen to the children of the War on Terra: we were never even asked to give up our freedom to win the Cold war; they are asked that repeatedly by our alleged leadership today in the supposed interest of the War on Terra. God help those children; God help us all… we’re going to need it.

I’m getting real sick of these people claiming that the problems they face are the worst problems that ever existed and require reactions more extreme than ever before. Every time someone calls them on their garbage they resort to ad hominem attacks.

This whole government is a bunch of incompetent cowards who want to dive under the bed every time a car backfires.
