John Edwards

I’m going to join Hipparchia and Philip Barron of Waveflux in backing John Edwards as the Democratic nominee for President.

He may be having problems in the Democratic primaries, but I don’t have the slightest doubt that he can beat any of the Republicans still in the race, because he is ready to fight. If the media hadn’t decided not to cover his campaign, he would be in much better shape than he is, because he has a better message, and a better vision of what needs to be done to fix the country.

“It’s time for tourniquets, not aroma therapy”, is the title of Hipparchia’s post, and people who say things like that should back up their words, so I will vote for him in the primary, for whatever good that may do, and support him any way I can.

I’m not going to avoid criticizing or praising anyone, but he is the only one left with a reasonable if long chance to win who actually seems to understand the problems people are dealing with today. Some have suggested that if this thing goes to the convention undecided, we could end up with Al Gore, whether he wants it or not. [Wow, just like the VSP, a totally unsourced “some” followed by a provocative statement – I could be writing for the MSM or be on a cable show. 😈 ]

Don’t get pushy.

I support Edwards. He put out a health insurance plan…then everyone else followed. He started talking about the economy…then everyone else followed. He called for an “economic jump start” to the economy….now everyone is talking about a “jump start.”

Besides…he’s the only one talking about Katrina and the Gulf Coast. The region seems to have slipped everyone else’s mind.

Odd that you, Bryan, would reach the same conclusion I did on virtually the same day. Were we separated at birth? I told the wife Tuesday night, “I just have to vote for Edwards.” She’s voting for Obama.

The marriage will survive: We agree we’ll both be voting for whoever the Democrats nominate. There is no other rational choice among all the announced candidates of the political parties — or the Unannounced One of no party, for that matter.

As I’ve said, Jill, he is talking about my problems, and talking about them directly, not as a footnote in a policy paper. Corporations in the form of insurance companies, Pharma, the military-industrial complex are the problem, and Edwards wants to face them down.

It was probably the lull between cold fronts and the change in barometric pressure, John B. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and then my other choices starting dropping out.

If I could vote, I’d vote for Edwards (of the three).

It’s not so much what any of them are saying, it’s what they have done… their history if you like. 🙂

I really wish that Dennis Kucinich had the resources to make a proper run because he is the only one you would recognize as a liberal in Australia. In the rest of the world the top three would all be considered center right candidates, with Edwards closest to the center. The way the early primaries are operated left of center candidates don’t have a chance as both Iowa and New Hampshire would be considered rural areas in most of the world.

I’m mulling over my choices at the moment too, since I have the absentee ballot in hand, and have pretty much decided on Edwards for much the same reasons. Whether or not he wins the nomination (and given how corrupt the process is proving to be, it seems unlikely), it will be a message sent to the Party, and a message that voting for Dennis Kucinich (who apparently has given up and is now trying to retain his House seat) definitely won’t send because Dennis is no longer on the Party apparatchniks’ radar at all (you have to be, like, actually *campaigning* for President, to be on their radar, and all Dennis K seems to be running for is the job of “gadfly”).

Well, if K is considered *Liberal*, he wouldn’t get very many votes here then! LOL

I think we all know that if there is any hope of fixing the mess, it will take someone with a huge amount of guts, integrity and intelligence. For me, Hillary is in it more for herself than anyone else, ditto Obama… I mean, they both have agenda’s they are trying to keep to themselves. Edwards, for me, is the lesser of the *evils*. His history suggests he has some issues also,.. but maybe he is smart enough to realize that now is not the time for playing silly games. The biggest problem is that anyone who truly wants to *fix* things, has to include their own party! Both the Democrats and Republicans are a mess. And both parties know it, and both will make sure nobody who would try has a chance.

The most telling recent event for me was the Filibuster of the FISA bill by Dodd and Feingold. Clinton and Obama decided that campaigning for the crown was more important than supporting a filibuster of this bill. And now, the bill is up again, and once again, Harry Ried wants to pass it. And once again, Clinton and Obama are conspicuosly silent.

The only Dem Prez candidate I can actually *see* that has some guts and moral fiber, is Dodd. And it seems he has no chance now.

Only way I can honestly see anything being truly fixed, is… Viva La Revolucion!

But… That will never happen in today’s America. Of course, in the America of a century ago… it would probably have happened by now. 🙂

This is another blog I like (and I like the name!) 😉

I think that for a long time you and I were leaning towards Bill Richardson, Badtux, based on his experience and proven ability, but those are not valued very highly by voters in conservative states apparently. Yes, I wish Dennis would just commit to a real run and stop playing Harold Stassen.

Trying to get the US political system to do anything, Kryten, is a long, slow process. Congress is run by careerists who tend to be right of center and cautious to a fault. Gringrich showed it wasn’t necessary, and the Repubs showed that bipartisanship and consensus is irrelevant, but Dems are falling back into their old ways.

The only way to truly change things is in the primaries, to start dumping the careerists and get some people into Congress who understand the problems of the country.
